Evaluation 2: Group Presentation – Deadline 16.02.14

2 Dec

DEADLINE: Sunday 16th February at 11pm

Work handed in after the deadline will NOT be marked.

This deadline seems to be a long time in the future. Do not be fooled by the date. There are the Xmas holidays and also January exams beforehand. Additionally, this evaluation requires a lot of preparation work, so DO NOT wait until the last few days to try to complete it.

In groups of 4, you will make a recorded presentation about a country (the business related aspects) or a company. You also need to write a transcription of the recording.

You can choose the people that you work with. You must let me know in a comment below who are the members of your group. Do this by Wednesday, 4th Dec at 10pm.

VIDEO

Every member of your group needs to speak for around 3 minutes minimum. So, with a group of 4 people, that means that your presentation needs to be at least 12 mins long.

As with Evaluation 1, the video must be uploaded to YouTube and you have to send me the link BEFORE the deadline.

Make sure you do a small test video before you record your whole evaluation.

When you are speaking you MUST be viewable in the video. You are NOT ALLOWED to read from a script! If you read from a script you will NOT PASS the evaluation.

TRANSCRIPTION

The transcription of what your group says must be handed in before the deadline. If you do not hand in the transcription, you will NOT pass.

SUBJECT OF PRESENTATION

Your theme can be either…

1. A company
2. A country (the business related aspects)

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this evaluation is to try to copy the effective and entertaining presenting style of Steve Jobs, whilst also using the business English from your textbook pages 55 to 94. This must be done using your English language skills, which means that you CAN NOT READ FROM A SCRIPT….. OK, I think everyone understands this thing about the script now, right? ūüôā

MEMBERS OF YOUR GROUP

Write the names of the four members of your group in the comments section below. Please include name and surname.

WORKSHOPS

In the class time before the deadline, we will have some workshops, where I will help you with your English, just as we did with the first evaluation.

‘HELP’ WORKSHOPS: Wednesday 5th Feb, Friday 7th, Wednesday 12th

DEADLINE EXTENSION – COMPANY TOUR

1 Nov

DEADLINE EXTENSION

I have decided to extend the hand-in deadline for Competence 1 – The Company Tour from Friday 8th to Monday 11th November at 11pm.

Due to the student strike (la huelga), plus two national holidays, there have been 3 lessons (4hours) missed. It is obvious to me after the first workshop (Wed 29th), that lots of people still need much more preparation for the evaluation.

Next Wednesday’s class (6th November) will be a workshop (not a normal lesson) where I can help anyone with any aspect of their preparation (e.g. correcting sentences, helping with ideas).

After that workshop, there are 5 more days (Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon) to complete the video and transcription.

GUIDE / PLAN

I strongly suggest that you follow this guide when planning and recording your tour.

1. WELCOME – introducing to each other, take your coat, coffee etc
2. SMALL TALK – trip, flight, hotel, weather
3. TOUR – a little bit about the company – other person asks questions. Little bit about the other company – other person asks questions
4. SMALL TALK – activities in the town/city – restaurant, recommendations etc

SCRIPT

Remember that you can NOT read from a script while you are recording. The competence is to ‘be able to welcome and introduce a visitor to your company’ – this is an oral activity. Reading from a script does not demonstrate that you have this competence. You can use notes to help you remember what to say, if you need them.

‘Not using a script’ was already clearly stated in the blog which gave the details of this evaluation.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE EVALUATION, EMAIL ME…. bbrennan@mondragon.edu

HOMEWORK: Read Class Rules and Comment

16 Oct

HOMEWORK is at the bottom of the page. DEADLINE: Sunday 20th, 11pm.

Now there is no minimum attendance level (before it was 80% to pass the course), so if you choose to come to class, these are the 3 basic rules below. If you can not follow these rules, do not come to class.

SPEAK ENGLISH

Lessons are for practising and improving English. If you are not going to to speak English and you are going to speak Basque/Spanish do NOT come to class. It’s completely obvious, but also easy to forget, that you can only improve your English when you speak in English.

So, even when you check your answers with the person sitting next to you, speak English. You are a perfect Spanish speaker already. You do not need to practise Spanish/Basque. However, EVERYONE in the class needs to improve their English level… by practising.

HAVE RESPECT

When I am speaking, pay attention. Too much time is being wasted while I wait for people to stop talking. Mondragon is not a high school – it is a university! Some students definitely need to ‘cambiar el chip’.

Also, when someone is making a presentation, have some respect and listen to what they are saying. Do not talk to the person next to you or use your mobile phone. When you do the difficult task of standing in front of everybody, you will want people to pay attention to you.

PARTICIPATE

Everyone needs to practise their English. You will not improve if you do not take part in class activities. If one day you are tired, bored or just don’t feel like doing English, do not come to class. Students need to be actively involved in the class to have a good atmosphere. I do not want to FORCE you to speak English. It is very difficult for the people who DO want to work to complete an activity if the other people in their group are not committed to the task.

If you want to sit at the back of the class and not participate, I would prefer it if you did not come to class. There is no minimum attendance to pass the course!

If you break the rules (above) you will be banned from coming to the following class.

Joseba Goikoetxea will be informed of this and it will also affect your final mark relating to ‘attitude / class participation’

EVALUATION

The dates for evaluation of the 4 competencies will be shown in the GADE calendar. All details of assessment tasks will be clearly written in this Mondragon WordPress blog.

It is your responsibility to read these details (and for all homework tasks) if you do not come to class. You must complete each evaluation before or on the date of the deadline (regardless of whether you come to class or not). Assignments handed in after the deadline will not be marked.

The minimum language level required for the competencies is CEFR B1.

HELP

If you have a problem or you need help with improving your English, do not wait Рcontact me by email ( bbrennan@mondragon.edu  ) or come to see me in the staffroom. I am in the staffroom before and after your Wednesday lesson and on Fridays from 9am Р1pm

If I do not see you in class again, good luck with your GADE course.

HOMEWORK: DEADLINE – Sunday 20th, 11pm.

You must comment below. In your comment, please write (or copy/paste)….

I understand and agree with all the class rules above.

If you do not understand or agree with rules, come and speak to me!

Thank you,
Bren

Just to add to “Have Respect” above, Joseba Goikoetxea sent this email to everybody in GADE 1 this week…
Arratsaldeon,

Vuelvo, por segunda vez, y espero que por √ļltima a tratar el tema del alumnado RUIDOSO de GADE 1.

He vuelto a recibir quejas de gente.

COMPETENCE 1: Company Tour (including small talk)

16 Oct

Preparation Lessons: Wed 30th Oct  &  Wed 6th Nov

In these classes, I will give you a selection of meeting situations to choose from. These lessons will be “workshops” where I will help all pairs with ideas (if needed) and also help to improve your Company Tour for appropriate Business Language and correct English.

HAND-IN DEADLINE: Friday 8th November, 23:00 – Hand in video recording of Company Tour AND written transcription

EVALUATION 1: COMPANY TOUR

Group of 2 people

Record a video of your group welcoming a visitor to your company and giving a tour (including small talk).

You are being assessed on…
1. Appropriate Business Language (pages 6 to 22 in your textbook and all class photocopies/activities)
2. Correct English (grammar and clear pronunciation)

Video Length: Minimum 4 minutes – Maximum 8 minutes

Together the group writes ONE complete transcription of what was said in your video.

You should NOT read from a script (guion) while you are doing the tour. If you read from a script you will NOT PASS the evaluation. You can use notes to help you remember what to say, but it is obvious when someone is reading from a script or when they are speaking naturally.

VIDEO INFORMATION

–¬†DEADLINE: Friday 8th November, 23:00

It is possible to book a room to make your recording by speaking to the secretaries. Also, you can lend recording equipment from the secretaries’ office, but if you want, you can use a mobile phone if the sound quality is good enough (see below).

Advice/Suggestion  Р Before you record your video, first make a 30 second test video. Make sure that you can HEAR both people speaking. If you cannot hear someone, you will not be able to write the transcription properly. Also, I will not be able to make an evaluation for that person.

The visual quality does NOT have to be like Hollywood!!! The important thing is the sound! You can move the camera around if you need to, it does not have to stay in a fixed point.

Everyone in your group must speak and contribute to the recording. If only one person speaks, then only that person will receive an evaluation mark. Both partners should speak around 50% of the time.

The video must be uploaded to Youtube and you must email the link to me.
There are 3 “settings” on Youtube when you upload a video: Public / Private / Unlisted. Select “Unlisted” for your video. This means that nobody will be able to find your video to view it…. but after you send me the link, I will be able to see it to make the evaluation.
After I have confirmed your evaluation mark, you can delete the video from YouTube.
Send the link of your video to me at  bbrennan@mondragon.edu

WRITTEN TRANSCRIPTION

–¬†DEADLINE: Friday 8th November, 23:00

After you have recorded your video, your group must write a complete transcription of the meeting.

You must send the transcription to me in WORD, or GOOGLE DRIVE.

I suggest that you use Google Drive because it is excellent for sharing/collaborating (between the members of your group) AND when you are working on a document it automatically saves what you write, so you can NOT lose what you have written because you forgot to press ‘save’.

Here is an example of the format of the transcription. FOLLOW THIS FORMATTING STYLE WITH YOUR GROUP’S TRANSCRIPTION.

To be fair to all members of the group, I suggest that you share the writing of the transcription equally. For example, one person could transcribe 0:00 to 3:00, the other person writes out 3:00 to 6:00. I also recommend that both people read what the other person has written to help each other correct mistakes.

HELP / QUESTIONS

If you need help with any part of the evaluation, DO NOT WAIT – contact me before it is too late. bbrennan@mondragon.edu

WHO IS YOUR PARTNER?

You need to arrange this yourselves. Then you must write a comment below BEFORE Wednesday 23rd Oct stating the full name of BOTH members of your group.

WHAT HAPPENS IF ONE PERSON IN A GROUP FAILS?

If someone in a team fails this activity, he/ she has a second opportunity to get a pass.
1) If there is more than one student in that situation, you can arrange a new team and give them a new situation to record a new company tour.

2) Another alternative could be to re-record the company tour again with their original partner (the one that passed), but the other student will not be assessed again.
